D’Tigers Dominate Group Stage, Emerge as AfroBasket Title Contenders

By Ojeakhe Ozoya
Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have sent a clear and resounding message to the rest of the continent, concluding their Group B campaign at the AfroBasket 2025 with a perfect 3-0 record and a direct ticket to the quarter-finals. The 2015 champions have been in scintillating form, showcasing a blend of offensive firepower, defensive tenacity, and deep squad rotation that has marked them as serious contenders for the title.
The D’Tigers began their quest with a convincing 77-59 victory over Madagascar. Despite a slow start, they found their rhythm in the second half, with veteran guard Caleb Agada leading the charge with 22 points. The win set the tone for what was to come, a testament to the team’s resilience and tactical adjustments under Coach Mohammed Abdulrahman.
Their most impressive performance, however, came against the defending champions, Tunisia. In a statement victory, Nigeria dismantled the three-time winners with a dominant 87-66 score line. Houston Rockets guard Josh Okogie was the star of the show, delivering a masterclass with a game-high 33 points. The win not only sealed their quarter-final berth but also signaled an end to Tunisia’s decade-long unbeaten run at the AfroBasket.

Nigeria wrapped up their group stage with a hard-fought 99-90 win over Cameroon. In a battle for group supremacy, the D’Tigers’ superior shooting and dominance on the boards proved decisive. Okogie once again led the scoring with 16 points, while a balanced team effort saw five other players reach double figures. The victory secured the top spot in Group B and ensured a more favorable path in the knockout rounds.
Having finished at the top of their group, D’Tigers will now face the winner of today’s clash between Senegal and South Sudan in the quarter-finals billed for August 20. While their opponent is yet to be determined, their current form and swagger make them a formidable foe for any team.
Prospects for the Championship:
With their flawless group stage performance, the D’Tigers have undoubtedly emerged as one of the favorites to lift the AfroBasket 2025 trophy. The team’s strength lies in its balance and depth, with a roster that can rely on multiple players to step up on any given night. The offensive brilliance of NBA star Josh Okogie, the veteran leadership of Caleb Agada and Stan Okoye, and the solid contributions from the entire squad make them a tough team to beat.
However, the knockout stage presents a new challenge, and every game from here on will be a test of their composure and tactical execution. While a Gombe Bulls coach, Samson John, had previously expressed doubts about the team’s chances, citing a lack of preparation, the D’Tigers have emphatically silenced those concerns with their stellar on-court performance.
With their eyes firmly set on reclaiming the continental crown, the D’Tigers are poised for a deep run in the tournament. If they can maintain their high-level performance and continue to play as a cohesive unit, a second AfroBasket title for Nigeria is a strong possibility.
