By Ojeakhe Ozoya

The Nigerian football community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Akin Olowokere, a newly appointed assistant coach for Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC). Olowokere, a vibrant figure who had just joined the Oluyole Warriors’ backroom staff, died after slumping during a training session on Monday morning, a shocking loss that has cast a shadow over the team’s preparations for the new season.

The incident occurred as the team was preparing for its second game of the 2025 ValueJet Cup. Eyewitnesses described a scene of sudden panic and urgency as Olowokere, in the middle of a routine morning training, collapsed on the pitch. Medical personnel on-site immediately attended to him, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite their best efforts, he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival, leaving players and staff in a state of profound shock. The official cause of death has not been disclosed, but the suddenness of the event has left many heartbroken.

In a statement released on Monday, the management of Shooting Stars Sports Club confirmed the sad news and paid tribute to their fallen colleague. The club described Olowokere as a “dedicated and passionate football tactician” who was also a “mentor, friend, and father figure to the players and many others.” The statement read in part: “His commitment to the growth and success of our team was unwavering… We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, players, and the entire Nigerian football family during this difficult time.”

Before his recent appointment to 3SC, Olowokere had a distinguished career in Nigerian football. He was a long-time player for Sunshine Stars of Akure, where he later transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant coach at his former club under the leadership of head coach Edith Agoye, showcasing his dedication and expertise in the sport. His move to 3SC marked a new chapter, one that was tragically cut short, but his legacy as a devoted player and coach will undoubtedly continue to inspire.
